Movie Monday - Wartime Farm Episode 5

Wartime Farm

Back by popular demand is the entire series of BBCs Wartime Farm.  BBC's "Wartime Farm" features the efforts of historian Ruth Goodman and archaeologists Alex Langlands and Peter Ginn, who run Manor Farm as it may have been run during World War II. The program focuses on all aspects of domestic and farming life of the period, with the team managing livestock, attempting to cultivate unused land, tackling new tools and technologies, and learning the basics of civil defense -- all while facing shortages. They face one of the biggest challenges in the history of the British countryside, what Winston Churchill called "the frontline of freedom."

Product Review & Give Away

Saver Emergency Breath System

The Saver Emergency Breath System is a compact and lightweight filter intended to give you those few precious minutes to escape from a house fire.  This easy to use gadget is a one use, 5 minute filter that will remove smoke, particles, and most importantly carbon monoxide.  The Canadian Preppers Network has been given one for testing, and a two-pack to give out to one lucky winner.

First...the test.
As I mentioned, this is a one shot product.  Once the seal is broken, the filter must be used or replaced.
To test this product, I'm certainly not going to light my house on fire, but I can find out if it works, at least to some degree outdoors.  In the below video, I light a smoke inducing fire in the old burn barrel and see if I can breath while standing directly in the path of the smoke.  If this product performs as advertised, I should have no problems.

As you can see from the video, the filter was quick and easy to deploy.  I had my face directly in the smoke path and could breath without sensing any contaminates.  In fact, I was so close to the fire at one point that I lost some eyebrow hairs(they'll grow back), but I could not sense the heat in the air that I was breathing.  So the big question is:  Does it work as advertised?
Answer:  Even better.

Now for the giveaway.
I have a two pack to send out to one lucky winner thanks to MySafetyIQ.
Enter by commenting "I'm In" in the comments section of this blog post.
Comments outside of that arena will not count.
Only one entry per person please.
Entries must be received by October 31st, 2017.
You must be a resident of Canada, or have a Canadian postal address to send the prize to.
You must be willing to provide your name and address to receive the prize via Canada Post.
Winner will be chosen by random draw on November 1st, 2017.

Good luck, and don't forget to visit My Safety IQ for more info.

Friday Book Recomendation

Wartime Farm

During World War Two Britain had to look to the land to provide the produce it had previously shipped in from abroad, meaning huge changes on both the agricultural and domestic scenes. Accompanying an 8-part BBC series and written by the three presenters who spend a year living on a reconstructed farm from the era, Wartime Farm sets these changes within a historical context and looks at the day-to-day life of that time. Exploring a fascinating chapter in Britain's recent history, we see how our predecessors lived and thrived in difficult conditions with extreme frugality and ingenuity. From growing your own vegetables and keeping chickens in the back yard, to having to 'make do and mend', many of the challenges faced by wartime Britons have resonance today. Fascinating historical detail and atmospheric story-telling make this a truly compelling read.
