Movie Monday - The Colony Season 1 Episode 1

The Colony Season 1 Episode 1

The Colony is a "survival experiment" broadcast on The Discovery Channel, in which ten people (and later more) must rebuild after a simulated viral outbreak kills most of the human population. They are given several blocks of abandoned industrial park bordering the Los Angeles River in downtown Los Angeles, where they are allowed to do anything they want and scavenge any supplies they can find.
Emphasis is placed on dealing with resource scarcity, novel uses of common (and not-so-common) found items to provide for the group in such a situation, and weighing the survival of other groups against the survival of one's own (i.e. stealing). There are several semi-scripted encounters with others (various wanderers, raiders, and a trader), which demonstrate possible social interactions in such an environment and the play between compassion (give them food because it's the right thing to do?) and pragmatism (keep it for yourself because you need it more?). All actors are forbidden to directly harm the Colonists (lest they risk an insurance nightmare and subsequent cancellation), but panic, emotion, and malnutrition (on the Colonists' side) meant that accidents could still happen.

Military Comparison - US vs NK

There has been a lot of concern lately over the possibility of war breaking out between the US and NK.  While the prospect of a nuclear conflict can be terrifying, the actual possibility of war breaking out may be a lot less than some would have you believe.
Regardless of the rhetoric from BOTH sides, the real question is will the button be pushed?  Here is a little comparison of military capabilities between the two sides, and it has to make you wonder if NK really would do the unthinkable.

According to the August 2017 polling report released by Axios, ‘’ 82% of Americans are afraid of nuclear war with North Korea’’.  But looking at what would obviously be a one sided war, one must ask if anyone could really be crazy enough to push things that far.

Movie Monday - Wartime Farm Episode 8

Wartime Farm

Back by popular demand is the entire series of BBCs Wartime Farm.  BBC's "Wartime Farm" features the efforts of historian Ruth Goodman and archaeologists Alex Langlands and Peter Ginn, who run Manor Farm as it may have been run during World War II. The program focuses on all aspects of domestic and farming life of the period, with the team managing livestock, attempting to cultivate unused land, tackling new tools and technologies, and learning the basics of civil defense -- all while facing shortages. They face one of the biggest challenges in the history of the British countryside, what Winston Churchill called "the frontline of freedom."

Lest We Forget

Some 619,636 Canadians enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during WWI, and approximately 424,000 served overseas. Of these men and women, 59,544 members of the CEF died during the war, 51,748 of them as a result of enemy action. The small Royal Canadian Navy reported 150 deaths from all causes. No accurate tabulation exists for Canadians who served as volunteers in the Royal Navy or British Army. An additional 1,388 Canadians died while serving with the British Flying Services.
Of the more than 172,000 Canadians who reported wounds during the war, medical authorities classified approximately 138,000 as battle casualties. The rest were injuries suffered away from the war zone. Of the wounded who survived, 3,461 men and one woman had a limb amputated. One soldier, Curly Christian, was the only Canadian to lose all four limbs and survive. No reliable method existed for tracking or treating psychological casualties, but authorities identified over 9,000 Canadians as suffering from “shell shock”.

Over the course of WWII, more than 1.1 million Canadians served in the Canadian Army, Royal Canadian Navy, Royal Canadian Air Force, and in forces across the Commonwealth. More than 44,000 lost their lives and 54,000 were wounded.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning,We will remember them.
